Today we honor one of the most influencial, motivating, and powerful leaders in our history, Martin Luther King Jr. A man whose passion for creating equality revolutionized the lives of his generation and future generations. We’ve rememberd him in a number of ways, but Pete Fecteau had an original idea for paying tribute to Martin Luther. His creativity inspired him to arrange 4,242 Rubik’s Cubes into a mosaic entitled “Dream Big.”

“Dream Big” measures 19′ x 8’6″ x 2.25″ (5.8m x 2.6m x 5.7cm ). It weighs roughly 1000 pounds (454kg). Each cube has been “reversed solved” or twisted so that one of the faces maps it’s nine stickers into the total image, 38,178 total.

The mosaic was on display during the 2010 ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan USA from September 22nd to October 10th. There were roughly 30,000 people who came to view the mosaic during that time.

The construction process took a little over 40 hours and the final installation took about five and a half hours with 6 volunteers helping.

We – Dig – It: LED Makes Augmented Vision A Reality

The creative license authors and film producers use to imagine such fantastic gadgets in popular science fiction movies, like Terminator or Minority Report, seems to be inspiring the scientists that make these inventions a reality. While scientists might not be able to hand us a finished product yet, they are able to talk about seemingly impossible inventions in realistic terms.

The mobile phone in my pocket is the perfect example of unbelievable technological progress. If you asked me 10 years ago if I would have a device in my pocket that would replace, my camera, discman, GPS, and laptop, I would have told you were crazy, but it happened. With each new technological advancement we quickly adapt and often under-appreciate the power that now exist at our finger tips. We now live in a global world where digital information travels across our planet with the click of a mouse, or touch of a finger. These innovations we take for granted wouldn’t be possible with out a bold idea, imaginative vision and and a lot of highly intelligent people.

Although at Cerno we are fascinated with all technological advances, we are inherently more interested in how LEDs continue to influence technology. Which is why we found this article on leee Spectrum so fascinating. Not only are LED’s revolutionizing the lighting industry, they are empowering doctors and scientist to address human ailments and limitations which were previously untreatable.

This year, LED Lights are impacting the way we see things, literally. Special LED lights integrated into contact lenses may soon help the visually impaired with everything from watching television to translating foreign languages.

Imagine UN officials being able to converse in multiple languages while interacting among their fellow diplomats; all facilitated by intelligent LED contact lenses. These intelligent LED lenses, which are still being hashed out in a lab, have the potential to translate live speech.

Residential Lighting Press Coverage

This month, Residential Lighting Magazine featured the Aeris chandelier on the cover of their November issue. The November issue highlights designers who are using LEDs in an innovative approach to lighting design. We are flattered and honored to have the Aeris chandelier on the cover of such a well respected magazine in the lighting industry.

Inside the cover, Residential Lighting had this to say about the Aeris:

“The Aeris chandelier is the latest design collaboration between California-based modern LED lighting company Cerno and Frank Carfaro’s New York based furniture line Desiron. Composed of walnut, aluminum and polymer, the 16 w fixture incorporates the warm color temperature 2700K and dimmability (Triac or ELV) that are increasingly demanded of today’s LEDs. Light output is 645 lumens of downlighting plus a 430- lumen uplight for an ambient glow.”

Two weeks ago, Cerno’s blog featured Isang Litrong Liwanag (‘Litter of Light’), a philanthropic project spearheaded by MIT scientists. The projects goal is to deliver sustainable, cost-effective lighting solutions to third world countries, specifically in Brazil and Mexico. We ran into another article in the New York Times last Monday, which featured a design show at the United Nations called “Design With the Other 90 Percent: Cities.” The show features functional designs, created by locals in developing countries, aimed at solving key infrastructural issues; such as sustainable energy, transportation and general health improvement.

There is a growing movement of professional designers who are taking their passion for useful, artful design and using it to create quality-of-life improvements for people in the developing world. These designers are listening to the locals needs in order to tackle these root challenges with efficient and cost effective solutions.

Patterns, a design blog published by IDEO, highlights several pertinent questions that designers should look to resolve when designing for a developing region. The question a designer should ask when addressing these challenges is, “How can companies serve the legitimate needs of the under privileged not just for price but also for status, aspiration, and dignity?”

One of the primary challenges these remarkable designers endeavor to remedy is to allow the solution to shine through in an artful way. They hope to improve the local inhabitant’s quality of life on an emotional and physical level with the design’s form and function.

Kanu Agrawal, is a graduate from the Yale School of Architecture in Environmental Design. Agrawal opened a show last February at New York’s Center for Architecture called ‘Jugaad Urbanism: Resourceful Strategy for Indian Cities.’ Jugaad is a Hindi term for ‘the ingenuity of citizens living in resource-constrained environments.’

"There's always this narrative of failure and tragedy when one discusses Indian urbanism," Agrawal says. "So instead of doing that, [the show] sort of represents solutions. People respond creatively where there are shortages of resources."

This emphasis on design from the ground up is a step forward. Listening to the people who live in these compromised conditions assists the designers in their pursuit to create useful, artful and sustainable solutions. These artful solutions often breathe life back into to a village’s economy, by stimulating commerce and creating gathering places for the community to be social and interact with one another.

For most of the developing world, the gift of thoughtful design has yet to be given. But for the few areas that are fortunate enough to experience this innovative collaboration between designer and those in need, this is a positive start and we hope this movement continues to gain momentum. In the future Cerno would love to participate in such a thoughtful and impactful endeavor.

The past week has been a phenomenal. The press coverage has been incredibly flattering, as two great publications have decided to feature our work.

The Wall Street Journal Covered in their article titled, LED Gaga on October 29^th. This is what they had to say:

“Despite its funky looking head, Sero is still all about form following function. LEDs need to stay cool to maintain their longevity, so Sero's head is essentially a "pin-fin" heatsink; air flows between the rods, dispersing heat. Cerno at Sea

Sailing around the world is not for the faint of heart; you must have an insatiable appetite for adventure and be resilient when constantly being confronted by the oceans unpredictable strength. All three founders of Cerno are sailors and have dreamed of such an adventure; however the current preoccupation with growing Cerno has made it more difficult to spend time on the water. Fortunately we get to live vicariously through our good friends David and Suzi, who embarked are their journey just over two years ago.

David and Suzi are not adhering to a strict schedule, but rather negotiating the seasons wisely and spending as much time as they would like at each new destination. After departing from Newport Beach, they explored Mexico and Central America, next they headed to the Galapagos Islands and continued on to explore Fiji and the rest of the South Pacific. Their next stop is New Zealand.

At Cerno, friendship is a core part of our ethos. It has sustained us from beginning and the bonds we share with our friends, both near and far, continue to be a huge part of where we draw our strength and inspiration. When we found out that David and Suzi would be sailing around the world, we were inspired to create our first LED fixture specifically designed to accommodate life on the high seas.

Our standard energy efficient LED light source inherently solved half of the challenge of always trying to conserve energy where you can; which is extremely important when running off battery power. The second challenge was to design a compact, articulate, and durable light that could handle the continuous battering of the ever-changing ocean. Daniel and Nick put their heads together and came up with a perfect solution that resolved all of the predetermined design challenges.

Long story short, because we are currently realizing another dream, which is Cerno, we could not be happier that a piece of all of us is sailing around the world with our good friends and helping Dave and Suzi illuminate their cabin every night.

Our friend Michelle, who loves all things design, thought we should check out this entertaining video of Theo Jansen’s Strandbeest.

Since 1990, Jansen has been creating a second life for plastic yellow tubes, bottles and canvas. Possibly the most artistic use of recyclable goods that we have come across. These friendly beasts- called Animari- and are fueled by the natural environment and come to life when gusts of wind propel them to explore freely.

They’ve showed up at Tokyo in show rooms and have been set free to roam Trafalgar Square in London.

We - Dig - It: Isang Litrong Liwanag (‘Litter of Light’)

Once in a while, you watch a video that makes you say “ wow.”
The YouTube Video, titled Isang Litrong Liwanag ADVERTISEMENT, did just that.

The Isang Litrong Liwanag (Which, when translated into English, means ‘Litter of Light') project is the latest venture for MyShelter Foundation. Designed and developed by students from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT,) the Solar Bottle Bulb provides a simple and easily replicable technology to address the lighting needs of many in the developing world. Isang Litrong Liwanag aims to bring the eco-friendly Solar Bottle Bulb to underprivileged communities nationwide.

Isang Litrong Liwanag will be featured on October 22, 2011 at TEDx Dubai; this year’s theme of which is, “The Beauty of Small Things.”

At Cerno, we have a soft spot for Laguna Beach based creative start-ups with a unique vision and voice. Roark is a new homegrown brand and their roots are growing fast. Although the company’s identity is enigmatic and somewhat shrouded in mystery, they effectively manage to communicate a theme and story of artistic adventure.

Who and what is Roark?

Roark is a passionate explorer of the finer things that life has to offer. He is described, “as comfortable at the Sydney Opera House as he is in an Argentinean holding cell...” Their debut line reflects this character. It is minimalist yet stylistic, durable and timeless. They go on to say that, “The Roark Revivalist crew is a fashionable but understated faction, willing to spend 30 hours on an airplane, in a car, or on a train, just to shred alone.”

Roark’s vibe is infectious. The more I learn about the company, the more nostalgic and inspired I become to pick up a Kerouac novel, leave the computer and desk behind for a bit and hit the road on a new adventure.

Roark does not have any team riders, however, they have selected 3 amazingly talented Laguna natives who live the Roark lifestyle. Jon Rose, Mikey Todd and Carl Smith are perfectly suited to be Roark’s first ambassadors.

Mikey and Jon, both surfed professionally for the better part of the last decade before deciding to follow a higher calling. Mikey currently spends the majority of his days and nights studying architecture and design at the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design. He still manages to sneak in a few surfs in Rhode Island. Jon is now a full time philanthropist; running his NPO Waves for Water, which provides safe drinking water to underdeveloped and disaster ridden areas around the globe. Jon also still manages to surf a lot; Hence the name, “Waves for Water.”

Carl is an artist and entrepreneur, who splits his time between Laguna and the Czech Republic. He is a painter, industrial designer, graphic artist and collage master.

Revolights were dreamed up in Palo Alto by three young California guys (Hey! That sounds familiar), who wanted a safe and efficient way to ride their bikes around the neighborhood at night. So they tested a few ideas and found the right solution by placing LED lighting inside the wheels of their bicycles to make their bikes more visible. Check out Revolights in this online video. As far as philanthropic efforts are concerned, we fully believe in getting inexpensive and efficient lighting to rural parts of the world. When the sun sets in rural Sub-Sahara Africa, flickering candlelight and polluting kerosene lamps are the only source of lighting for residents.

Lighting Africa, backed by the World Bank and International Finance Corporation is marketing affordable, efficient and clean off-the-grid lighting products including solar lamps. Lighting Africa encourages governments to reduce import duties and encourages consumerism by persuading banks and micro-finance institutions to ease lending to consumers in the market for solar lights.

In the office, we love to share what we find cool or interesting and relevant to what we are trying to grow here. So then we thought, why not post about it?

So here's what we found cool this week: SHFT.

SHFT is a platform where current cultural changes or shifts are monitored when it comes to art, design and technology. Basically the three things we're interested in most. Actor/Activist Adrian Grenier and film producer Peter Glatzer teamed up with sustainability/design expert Lauren Gropper with the goal to "nudge the ideas of sustainability into pop culture."

We especially like this Heather Heron Surf Bag available in re-purposed military tent or Japanese denim. Also features salt and sun-resistant hemp rope and recycled, organic leather ties.

This week they wrote a little feature on us, which we appreciate, but more importantly take the time to explore SHFT for yourself. We can appreciate what they are trying to accomplish, which is awareness of environmentally conscious products, services and ideas.

Cerno’s 10 days in New York were certainly eventful. Immediately after arriving we visited and assisted with setting up two new showrooms that we will be working with in Manhattan. After the Lighting by Gregory and Desiron spaces were in order it was straight over to the Javits Center to set up our booth for the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF).

It is difficult to describe the significance of ICFF for people who are not familiar with the modern and contemporary industrial design market place. The best parallel that I can draw is to compare it to fashion week, but for furniture, lighting and accessories rather than clothing. The minute ICFF closes each day, it is off to a series of events hosted by the all the flagship showrooms in the city, most of which are situated in SoHo.

Opening day and Cerno’s debut at ICFF was amazing; we met with a ton of incredible designers, architects, and showrooms all that seemed genuinely intrigued and curious to learn more about our line. We introduced several new pendants and two new floor lamps (please check out the Cerno product page to view the additions to the line.) Our fellow exhibitors made for great company and did not fail to impress the Cerno team with their work. It was truly a compliment and honor to be amongst so many talented product designers and their latest works.

When opening day concluded, the Cerno team headed straight to SoHo, where Frank Carfaro and his team at Desiron were hosting their ICFF event, which also served as the formal announcement that Cerno and Desiron were working together and collaborating on a new line of lighting products. Desiron held an amazing event, with fresh risotto and salmon appetizers and a refreshing assortment of beverages. The DJ and band that kept everyone in attendance moving; I honestly think I witnessed a few dance-offs. We would also like to thank the entire Desiron team for their VIP treatment and great hospitality. To see pictures from the event visit us on Facebook.

Cerno is extremely excited about this new partnership with Frank Carfaro and Desiron and looking forward to introducing several new products under this partnership this year. The rest of the week was a true test of stamina, nonetheless we made it and it all went extremely well. Next stop on the tradeshow circuit is LA, June 24-26, for Dwell on Design and then back to New York in August for NYIGF.

Cerno Doing the Rounds in NYC, Part I (ICFF)

Newsflash: Cerno is headed to New York for not one, but two(!), extremely exciting developments.

First off, we will be participating in the 23rd annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) for our very first time. Though "first times" in life tend to be a rather mixed bag, in this case I think we can safely say it will be a great one. We are very honored and flattered to have been given the opportunity to show off our products, meet designers from all over the world, and be inspired by the design extravaganza that is ICFF.

Now that I've enthused about our upcoming participation, I think I ought to explain just what the fuss is about. What, exactly, is the ICFF, other than a nifty sounding acronym?

Here's the official rundown for your reading pleasure:

"Widely considered to be the largest and most prestigious design show in the U.S., the23^rd ICFF will showcase 590 jury-selected exhibitors hailing from 43 countries and is estimated to draw in an audience of 24,000. The ICFF will run from May 14^th to May 17^th in New York’s Javits Convention Center, where hundreds of international designers will converge to showcase their designs and products."

We sincerely hope that those of you who are in New York City at the time, or nearby, will come visit us at booth 840. As many of you already know, we are quite friendly, chill Southern Californian folk who love talking design, and we try to be as photogenic as possible (in case you want to take pictures.) At any rate, we will definitely be smiling, so do come give us a holler.

What else could possibly rival the excitement of the ICFF, you ask?

While in New York for the ICFF, we will also be unveiling a new line of fixtures that we designed collaboratively with Frank Carfaro of Desiron. While we are very proud of the end product, we are also excited about what a great learning experience it has been to work with Frank and his team at Desiron . The synergies between Cerno and Frank Carfaro and his team at Desiron were obvious from the start; we approach design from a similar perspective and share a like set of values, namely a mission to innovate quality American made products. It's always a pleasure to learn from established designers and participate in an exchange of like minds. We look forward to more collaborative projects in the near future.

Cerno Update

Spring is here and we are looking forward to some upcoming events that will hopefully be as successful as the last few months have been. We are heading back to New York for ICFF in May and we have committed to attending NYIGF again in August.

With the success of NYIGF last month, our sales have substantially increased. Our new line of pendants will hit production soon and we added several new retailers to our roster. Cerno products are now being sold from coast to coast.

We’ve had a lot of great press, both in print and online this month. We are currently featured in Residential Lighting, Dwell Magazine and numerous online articles and blogs.

Today we're attending the Spring Market Event at the Laguna Design Center featuring Christiane Lemieux for Dwell Studio and Suzanne Rheinstein for Kravet/Lee Jofa.

Eric Brand from Witford will be discussing how they used global resources to help create unique, custom designs with confidence and Barbara Deckmeyer, a marketing consultant will be sharing marketing tools tailor made just for interior designers with her “Social Media- Wave of the Future” lecture.

Throughout the day Roomscapes will be teaching guests how to properly store wine and serve samples of wine, cheese and other treats. We’re most excited to see the Lighting Innovation Gallery featured in two showrooms.

Update:
The Spring Market event had a great turn out today. We began scoping out the Lighting Innovation Gallery, for obvious reasons. We were instantly dazzled by the Swarovski Crystal room, and all the innovative design options they had to offer.

We then headed to Barbara Deckmeyer's presentation "Social Media- Wave of the Future" which was held at Fremarc. Barbara is the tech savvy owner of High Dollar Designer, and she was able to explain clearly the necessity of social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Blogs.

After hearing Barbara, we hurried over to the THG presentation in the B&C Select suite. THG products consist of faucetry, accessories, bathtubs and basins, featuring in the world's most exclusive and prestigious resorts, hotels, residential properties, royal palaces and yachts. Pedro, the guest speaker from the family owned company, told us that THG is one of the few companies that actually make their own tools and molds for their products. All of their products are made to order and polished by hand.

Arguably, the biggest crowd drawer was Suzanne Rheinstein's presentation, "Design Details: A Focus on Fabrics" held in the Center Court. Suzanne Rheinstein is the owner of Hollyhock, and she recently created a new fabric line for Lee Jofa.

Met a lot of great people today and learned many cool new things about design, social media and fabrics. Successful event.

Proto Homes builds modern, sustainable and tech-rich homes in the greater Los Angeles area. Like Cerno, Proto Homes’ product is innovative, efficient and modern, which is why we were happy to provide the architect and developer with a Cerno Onus and Silva task lamp for the event.

Proto Homes includes a wireless mesh network within every home, controlling audio/visual, climate control, security cameras and fireplace, remotely from an iPad. You can literally monitor your security cameras from JFK airport if need be. This is the kind of innovation and technology we appreciate! Cerno’s 9 day exodus to the Mecca of design in the United States got off to a rocky start. We were supposed to be on the first flight out of Orange County and fly direct to Newark and join the rest of the bridge and tunnel commuters on a short trip into Manhattan. Unfortunately unpredictable and insurmountable weather patterns canceled are flight; fortunately we made it onto a mid-day flight that would land us in Houston. We enjoyed a 5 star dinner at a Houston Waffle House, went back to the hotel to enjoy 4 hours of sleep before waking up at 4:00 a.m. to catch the first flight out. We eventually made it to New York, headed straight to the Javits Center to start constructing our booth.

From here on out things went well, despite sleet, snow and sub-arctic temperatures it was great to be back in New York amongst so many amazing designers and friends that we rarely get to see. NYIGF is the most prestigious home, gift and accessories show in the United States and buyers from all 53 states/territories and 85 different countries gathered to see Cerno’s latest and greatest products.

Prior to making the journey our expectations were undefined, but our goals were clear. We wanted to introduce the line to a segment of the market that was yet to see our product and with buyers and designers from all the top showrooms and design firms from around the world; and this was a great venue to do that. Although the weather definitely made it a quieter show than some in the past, there were 35,000 attendees that were there to add the newest and best products to their current collections.

It was a great showing and Cerno’s designs and products that we passionately believe in were validated once again. We picked up several new accounts, which I will share with you soon. What I can disclose is that we now be well represented across New York, Florida, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and several other locations that will be available on our website in the coming weeks.

All in all, it was great show and we are looking forward to going to back to New York in May for the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF).

LEDs Not a Trend

LEDs are currently making their mark in various industries and showing up everywhere, including airplanes, cars, and for utilitarian purposes such as street lights and stop lights. Don’t you love stepping on to Virgin America and experiencing the trance music and the LED mood lighting? I sure do. Airbus started using LED lighting in 2007 and Boeing began using it in their 787 Dreamliner aircrafts in 2009; just to name a few of the wise companies’ already taking advantage of this game changing technology.

I’m delighted to see that Cerno falls under two of the categories for “4 Top Lighting Trends for 2011”, in the Statement with Fabric and LED Lighting categories! However, LEDs are not just a trend, it’s a growing movement. LEDs lighting has a lifespan of 50,000 hours or more. The Department of Energy report on LED technology reveals that 7% of America’s electricity is used to light homes and businesses. With the increase of LED lighting within the home, over the next 20 years, the cumulative savings at today’s energy prices would be around $120 billion. These savings can potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 246 million metric tons of carbon. LEDs superiority to other light cannot be ignored and as the early adopters of this amazing technology already know, using LEDs will save you money on energy cost while also helping to keep our planet healthy.

The beauty of industrial design is the process of designing for necessity, while never neglecting the aesthetics of the product. As a matter of fact, rarely, almost never are products designed as purely utilitarian. Take a second and examine the fork, or spoon you used for breakfast, the streetlight you stopped at on the way to work, the doorknob you turned to open your office door. All these items, which appear to be strictly tools of necessity, are meticulously designed to serve a specific purpose, but also to aesthetically work well in the built environment.

As long as humans have been designing and building, the end product is arrived at based on the available tools and materials at the designer and builders disposal. Since the earliest days of design mankind has been at the mercy of what the natural environment provides as a material pallet. Oil, silicon, iron and lumber, are all naturally occurring in our environment, some abundant, and some extremely scarce, and some more pollutant than others.

As designers and creators of consumer goods, we must be accountable to our environment; it is our responsibility and duty to be custodians of our planet and design with a steadfast set of eco-conscious practices in place.

At Cerno we strive to design and build responsibly from an ideas conception to shipping the final product. Fortunately, when designing with LEDs the product is inherently extremely green, because of LEDs longevity, extremely low energy consumption as well as their non toxic materials. Beyond using FSC lumber when available and recyclable aluminum, at Cerno we build our product to last and in theory there is nothing more important for the environment than creating consumer goods that will pass the test of time and not need to be repurchased. An LED constructed with integrity and with ample thermal management can last over 50,000 hours, which equates to approximately 17 years, if one uses their light source 8 hours a day and longer if used it less.

A friend of Cerno and talented fashion designer is featured on the Daily Front Row, and in the article she announces a limited addition collaboration project with Cerno, which will be unveiled on November 19th at the Peter Blake Gallery in Laguna Beach. Kamm who recently opted to go on maternity leave after having a baby boy, is back designing and creating some amazing new products.

Although I usually study the pages of each new issue of Dwell when it arrives, it has been a crazy few weeks since the October issue arrived on my desk and little did I know that Cerno made it on to the first page of the article about this years Dwell on Design Show. Very nice surprise, so thanks again to Dwell for putting on an amazing show and selecting a photo that featured Cerno. The second Image came from the Dwell website, which was another nice surprise.

Cerno is committed to our philanthropic obligations and has started exploring shining a light on so many of the people that live in darkness without electricity, hence providing light to read by and promote education.

1.7 billion people live without electricity, and 500 million of them living in sub Saharan Africa. Cerno looks to help by collaborating with a Solar LED lamp company and contribute profits to a very important cause.

Cerno Received an Award at the LED Show in Las Vegas, August 2010

Cerno’s LED Show 2010 adventure started about 120 miles outside of Las Vegas in the California high desert, where we were met by fierce torrential downpour and intense lighting and thunder. California Highway Patrol slowed the traffic to about 15 mph as they escorted us through this unanticipated monsoon. The road instantly became a river, the windshield wipers were useless as the cracking and banging sounds produced by the energy of this storm were making us feel pretty small and helpless. Our only option was to relax and enjoy the show. As we were squinting to follow the white lines on the road a power pull at about 100 yards away was struck by lighting and it was as if you could feel the electricity in the car. The extreme weather probably added about an hour to our drive, but it was well worth the entertainment.

We finally arrived in Las Vegas around 7:00 p.m. and set up the booth, ate dinner and called it a night. The tradeshow started at 10:00 Friday morning. Our goal at this show was to introduce the new product line to the Las Vegas market place. The show was a great success; we met some of the pioneers of the LED industry, spoke with several other product designers and received an award for Best Luminare for Public Use Interior.

The award winner was the Cubo, our hybrid reading lamp / wall sconce.
Exercising my personal bias I have to say that the award was well deserved and that Cerno’s product line stood out and received a lot of praise for being well designed.

I would like to thank James Highgate and his team for executing a good show.

Cerno & the iphone

Although I do not really know what to think of this cartoon that was published on the reputable technology blog, Crunch Gear, a few months back, I did think that it was flattering for Cerno's Alo task lamp to be represented in a cartoon with the iphone, the iconic cassette tape iphone skin, and a fine glass of (disposable) wine. All press is good press? I guess so.

South Laguna's Art Collective LEAF in Riviera

The LEAF crew is collaborative brand created by a group of talented young artists, designers, photographers and filmmakers that continually produce new projects and products that encompass their unique and distinct signature.

This week LEAF has been hired by the U.S. open of surfing in Huntington Beach to chronicle the event through their retro/hip point of view. In addition to their top of the line HD cams and SLRs you will be sure to find a couple Holgas, Lomos, super 8mm and 16 mm film cameras helping them capture the extravaganza through their eyes.

Cerno Update 8-5-10

It has been an exhausting summer that really has not felt like much of a summer at all for Cerno, ironically the place where we spent countless days as kids, 9^th Street Beach, seems to be rare luxury these days that does not fit into our long 6 day work weeks. Without pitying ourselves too much the silver lining is that it has been an extremely productive few months. We have been scaling our custom design build services back and focusing the majority of our efforts toward the launch of our new LED lighting line, which we are really excited about. The product looks great and will be available at select retailers in mid September.

To all of our friends who are interested in inspecting the new product line, please feel free to stop by shop and check it out.

Dwell on Design

This past weekend Cerno launched our new line of LED task lamps, a floor lamp and our hybrid sconce/reading lamp at the Dwell on Design show in Los Angeles, and it was an amazing weekend. Our booth was located in the Ford & Ching Pavillion along side a ton of great companies, including MRCW, Geneva Sound, Design Story, ABR and Riiska,

The new Cerno product line was very well received and we are now in the process of ramping up production and creating a new distribution network. The line will be immediately available through Cerno directly, and the Laguna Beach, Lightopia showroom, with several more retail outlets carrying the line soon.

Dwell put on a great show and the Dwell Staff showed their commitment to the exhibitors as they perused the floor and made an effort to get to know the exhibiting companies throughout the weekend. Dwell founder, Lara Deam, and President and Publisher, Michela O’Conner Abrams each spent time in the Cerno booth and carefully looked at the new line. In addition t to meeting and speaking with the informed and passionate Dwell team, the show was a great opportunity to get to know and meet with several of the designers and companies that Cerno really respects.

We would like to thank Dwell, Ford & Ching for having Cerno in their pavilion and MRCW for sharing a tight space with us and making it work well for 3 long days, and all of our old friends and new friends who took the time to stop by our booth and get to know the new product line that we have been researching and developing for the last year and half.

Cerno Sharing With the Kids

Director of Design at Cerno, Nick Sheridan, recently presented at the Job Fair for Serra High School. Cerno believes that giving back to the community is really important and look forward to hopefully inspiring some more future designers next year. In addition to Cerno the other presenters included our friends at Volcom, Electric Visuals, LRG and several other professionals who believe in the the need to be involved with the youth of today.
